Found a friend on High Street

Coming Home  9/21/16

Well this is my last preparation day. Friday I fly home. I suppose I'll be seeing many of you in a couple days but oh here might still want an update. And I will share a few thoughts I have had as I have reflected on the past two years.

We've taught quite a few people this week. It's been great! Sunday we spoke in church and President and Sister Gubler showed up to surprise us and say goodbye. We were each given 5 minutes... To share 2 years of experience. I only went over time about 2 minutes and it was super spiritual so it was alright.

Focusing has been much more difficult than I ever anticipated. We can't fall asleep at night because we are buzzing with excitement for what has happened that day. Then the next morning I wake up before six just to lie in bed awake until I realise Elder Redd is doing the same. First thing I think about when I wake up is seeing my family and then I can't fall back asleep. It'll be good to be home.

Extending with Elder Redd has been absolutely worth it. The opportunity to work alongside a friend who loves the gospel and has such a deep knowledge of it has been so rewarding. We have made some great memories in these two weeks.

Serving a mission is too difficult to describe what it's like. There has been a lot less rain than everyone told me I'd see. The diversity has surprised me, and I have learned to love that. I expected to face lots of rejection but I didn't expect so many flogged appointments and companion struggles. I have learnt way more than I'll ever need about loads of religions, and I've come to appreciate each individual's sincere belief. I learned that every single person in the world has some common needs and hungers. Everyone needs to feel loved and appreciated. Everyone needs hope for things to change for the better. Everyone needs a good example to look to.

Jesus Christ and His Gospel fulfil all of our hungers. There isn't anything that can satisfy our needs like He can. He is the Bread of Life and the Living Water. Whenever we stray from His fold He'll be calling us back because He is the Good Shepherd. With Christ nothing can ever go permanently wrong, and without Him nothing can ever go permanently right. The Book of Mormon is a powerful witness of His divinity because it is His word. I love my Saviour. I know that the only way to return to my Father in Heaven is in and through Jesus Christ. Whoever opens their heart to this truth will find greater joy than can be imagined.

For the last time formally,

Bonus round!  9/14/16

I'm companions with my friend. The work is going well. My friend Andy
loves Christ!

Ready.... begin!

Elder Redd and I are finding and teaching pretty well in unity. When
we teach with one voice it's much more powerful. We have been able to
experience quite a few little miracles and find people to teach. We
are each speaking in church this Sunday so hopefully we can use that
to bring a few friends to church.

I've had fun being companions with my friend. The score in Catan is
currently 1-2 so he's pretty good. It's also been unusually hot. It's
humid and sticky which really drains your energy. And we are both
pretty exhausted already but the Lord will give us strength.

One of my favourite updates is about our friend Andy. He has strong
faith in Christ and he is one of the nicest guys I've ever met. Really
cool too. Well we were finally able to sit down with him Thursday
evening and have a good discussion. We talked about covenants, the
marriage relationship with Christ as the bridegroom, and the power to
make covenants. He felt the Spirit.

On Saturday Andy gave us a lift to the chapel to witness Christina's
baptism. I don't know if I've mentioned Christina but she has been
meeting with the other elders for weeks and she's converted. We went
early to give Andy a tour of the church. We were able to explain how
our church service goes, teach a bit more doctrine, and he made some
friends. After the ordinance he told us about this powerful feeling he
had when he watched the baptism. He is so sincere in his quest to
follow Christ. I love talking about faith with him because you can see
in his eyes how much it means to him personally.

I love being a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. There isn't anything
else that is more important than following Him. He is the way, the
truth, and the life. We each have challenges and setbacks but eternal
life will be far greater than any struggle or suffering that we need
to overcome to get there.

Here are a few of my MTC mates who are flying home today

Previous message
Next messageBack to messages16 days until... :)

How can I update you in just a quick minute about this week? It has been eventful to say the least.

Elder Redd and I just got back to Guildford. We have been at the temple with our MTC friends who are departing. The temple was closed for cleaning so we didn't get to do a session yesterday but we had a lot of other activities. It was one of the best days ever! The testimony meeting in the evening was the most spiritual meeting I have ever had. I felt the Spirit burning within me constantly, and it came in increased surges at moments too. The meeting concluded with the hymn "God Be With You Till We Meet Again." I burst into tears in the second verse when we sang about meeting again at Jesus' feet.

Elder Aleman is off to Yeovil to be companions with Elder Feistl, a German missionary who was in Guildford a couple transfers ago. It's great because they are friends already and they'll be good together.

Elder Redd and I are seeking revelation on what we need to focus on in these next 16 days. It's going to go by in a flash.

Just thought you'd enjoy a snapshot from yesterday morning:
I'm on the train alone, travelling to the temple to meet up with my MTC group. If I hadn't extended with Elder Redd for these next two weeks I would have already left my proselyting area for the last time this morning at half eight. I would be seeing my family tomorrow. But I don't feel like my work is finished yet. I don't know if I will ever feel finished. I feel calm and collected like this is who I am, who I've always been, and who I'll always will be. There will always be people to help. I can show that Christlike love forever, even when I don't have a name tag, but in a way I never want to leave.

So yeah... I'm happy. I know that God is my Father because he has heard my prayers. In the most grand expression of love he sent Jesus Christ to save me. I know Christ's Atonement is real because through him I have felt forgiveness, hope, and true joy. He can change hearts; he has changed mine. It's an ongoing process but it's worth the effort. There is nothing as rewarding as being a disciple of the Living Son of the Living God. Life with them is good.

Love you! I'll see you in a bit!

Latest and greatest!    8/31/16

It has been blooming hot! I thought summer was over but a few days have been worse than summer. The temperature isn't unbearable but the humidity is. Being sweaty and sticky isn't my favourite.

Facebook has been a distraction at times but I think we are figuring out how to make it useful. It can be fun for the people here but it has also been like going home v1.

The elders got a referral a while for someone who was taught and attended church in London and he has a baptismal date for tomorrow (1 Sept). I interviewed him on Sunday after church and he's well prepared. So tomorrow Guildford Ward has their first baptism in 2016. Pretty cool! The elders have another friend who is going to be baptized on the 10th.

This time next week I will be companions with Elder Redd. Moves is Tuesday but it's not for sure where we will be yet.

Insight and Testimony

I had a cool insight one evening after watching the Mormon Message called The First Christmas Spirit which makes you think about Joseph, the husband of Mary, while he was raising Jesus as a lad. It is a very interesting perspective to ponder on.

The part that hit me was when Mary and Joseph are searching for 12 year old Jesus and find him at the temple with the religious teachers. Mary mistakenly calls him the son of Joseph and Jesus replies to Mary, "How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?" (Luke 2:49)

We don't know much about Jesus' mortal life before his ministry but I gained two major insights from Jesus' first signs of independence. This foreshadows what he will be doing from age 12-30. He is perfectly diligent after all so he is doing "His Father's business."

The next thing that struck me was how the young men in the church are ordained to the Aaronic Priesthood at age 12 so they too can begin being about the Father’s business.

These two details seemed significant to me. It was a profound moment of clarity of how important it is to assist our Father in Heaven in His purposes. I know that the work I am involved in is the Lord's. I have experienced so many tender mercies and answers to prayers. I know that if we will just follow Jesus Christ, including his teachings and perfect example, everything else will work out.

Ta for now,

23 Months!  8/24/16
I feel like I just emailed last week. So a few updates, the one family that we were hoping to teach wasn't home when we came back for our appointment. Dad asked about them so I thought I would mention it. We have a few people that seemed prepared when we taught them but then they have disappeared. So we will see what happens.

My old friend Luke, that I met with Elder Vieira, got in touch. Saturday night we were planning where we needed to be Sunday evening. I felt that we should go to try and get back in touch with Luke in the evening. RIGHT AFTER we prayed to confirm our plans, and said "Amen" we get a text from an unsaved number. I was so excited because I have been praying for this guy ever since we met. He seemed so sincere. We talked on the phone for a bit and got an appointment. Well then the next day he felt ill so we have to reschedule. But I am really hoping it works out because I want the best for him and I know the Gospel is the best!

So... tomorrow marks 23 months since I arrived in this country. That's pretty cool. It has been so challenging but absolutely worth it! I love teaching people about Jesus Christ and helping them find the joy that comes from following him.

17 August 2016

We are still having difficulty getting second and third appointments.
We are working hard and seeking revelation. Our prayers have
definitely been answered multiple times.

I had a great tender mercy this week. Saturday was a really rough day
for me and then the talks at Sacrament meeting were exactly what I
needed. I felt like the first speaker had been given these scriptures
to share just for me. I am grateful for reminders the Lord is looking
out for me!

Paul is planning on receiving his endowment at the temple on Tuesday.
I am very sad President said that I am not able to go. I was shocked
because I understood that missionaries are typically encouraged to
attend but I guess things have changed. I had been looking forward to
that for the last 54 weeks. Disappointed but relieved face Maybe next time.

Have a great week!

Howdy   8/10/16

Yeah so it's been a good week! Too much has happened to share because we haven't emailed for so long. ;)

Specialised Zone Training last Thursday got us fired up. We have been working hard and bearing testimony to as many people as possible. We made a new friend who wanted to learn more about Christ and she came to church too. The other elders have a friend who is working towards baptism and a couple that used to meet with missionaries surprised us and showed up to church. That was good. Church was really spiritual. It keeps feeling like we are having a breakthrough in the work of salvation but then opposition arises. It's good though because we have the opportunity to grow. Time is going fast and I need all the time I can get to be who the Lord wants me to be.

I thought I would share a quote that Dad reminded me of:

“The Lord works from the inside out. The world works from the outside in. The world would take people out of the slums. Christ takes the slums out of the people, and then they take themselves out of the slums. … Christ changes men, who then change their environment. The world would shape human behavior, but Christ can change human nature” (“Born of God,” Ensign, Nov. 1985, 6).

Monday, August 1, 2016 Can Be Together Forever!  8/01/16

President and Sister Gubler came to Guildford Ward yesterday so he did
our interviews. After I found out that might've been my departure
interview... We didn't talk about going home or marriage. It was
similar to other interviews talking about myself, the work,
missionaries, and doctrine. Later he emailed something called, "My
Plan ELSM," his version of the RM programme that hasn't been released
fully yet. Then Elder Redd and I received 8 Week emails from the
office asking for notifications of any changes in our parents' contact
info, destination airport, or anything related. That was fun.

We set some stretching goals for this transfer that we are committing
to. It feels like we are turning it up a notch. I honestly believe in
the harvest. I want to be a part of it because I love Him, and I love
the people we have taught. On Saturday I loved finishing the Book of
Mormon again. That's the fourth time we have studied it as a mission.
Meaningful study of it has deepened my faith and helped me to testify
with power.

We had a spiritual lesson with a friend named Edna on Friday. I can't
be bothered to write all the details this time but finding her home
and teaching took revelation and guidance from the Lord. In a whisper
we helped her understand the message of the Restoration, because the
husband was trying to get the newborn baby to sleep in the next room.

Towards the end of the visit she mentioned how our church owns a
beautiful "White church with an angel on top" in Columbia. She had a
look of awe in here eye when we explained about eternal families and
the sanctity of the temple. Then she asked, "Who can go inside? Can
anyone go or do you have to be baptised?" What a great question! The
answer is yes to both. Anyone can go inside but they must be prepared
and baptism is the first step. Prayers for Edna and her husband will
be appreciated.

Quite a few exciting things happened this week so this email won't be completely bland. It was moves week so two missionaries left my district and they will be replaced with greenies which means that all three companionships in Guildford District will be in training! Elder Vieira (my last comp) was moved from Oxford to the Spanish area in London so now he needs to learn another language. And I am heading into my last full transfer this week.

Yesterday Elder Aleman saved a baby deer that was trapped between two fences.

On Saturday we saw a woman who had two pallets of sod grass out in the driveway. It has been so hot and their grass was drying out. Elder Aleman wanted to help. I began making excuses (no time, we are dressed too smart, etc) but we offered to help. Normally people don't accept the offer but she had literally just prayed minutes before for help! Mel and her husband Alex were tired and needed it put in the shade in the back garden. We helped for 45 minutes and made some awesome new friends! Elder Aleman wrecked his clothes but I managed to stay clean somehow.

As for the work this week, we have been dropped multiple times this week but I am determined to find the elect. They are out there somewhere. We are improving in teaching together. Of course good planning and practice in study heels. Elder Aleman has been great at talking with people this week! I love seeing the effort he puts in. His time keeping skills still need a lot of work though but we'll get there by the end of the transfer... Hopefully.

I had a great exchange with Elder Olson (from Texas) this week. I'll share something cool that happened with him but it's more reading so skip the indented portion if you are bored.

"They always make it sounds so easy," Elder Olson and I said as we read the last bullet point of the activity on page 159 of Preach My Gospel. Often we get lazy and skip the activities but we decided to attempt it exactly how it was written.

We created some potential "silver bullets" (That is what President Gubler calls his specific approaches that are tailored around things he loves.) and practiced them in companion study. I wanted to find a music enthusiast to show my passion for music and then bring them to my passion for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. After practicing we evaluated it, refined the transition, and planned to apply it before lunch.

By 11:30 we had already had multiple opportunities to use this approach but they hadn't resulted in any new investigators yet. Then we were led to Kieran who was drinking a cup of tea on the porch and loving his music. The approach worked perfectly. He was involved in the conversation and he opened up. We taught him some there and then got a return appointment half an hour before our ward barbecue Saturday which he promised to attend.

The Lord's hand is guiding this work and we have been given the instructions on how to become effective instruments in his hands. I hope we can use them to reach for our potential and live according to our privileges as His servants.

I love the Book of Mormon. It has given me guidance to my soul searching questions this week. I know it is the word of God and that this is His work. I love how my understanding of the atonement deepens as I look for application from the Book of Mormon into my life. Everyone should try it!

Preparation day in the rain

Previous message

We have experienced miracles this week! I have felt motivated to help people truly progress in the gospel. I have received real revelation and felt guidance in the work. I can't even count the number of times the Lord's hand has been in the work this week. Again I have noticed when we do our best and are striving for exact obedience the Lord will trust us with his children to teach. I love my Father in Heaven.

Monday we had a couple extra minutes in town so we went to talk to people. The first person we stopped was Jack, a student here from China. He expressed his desire to learn about God but he didn’t know where to begin. In two minutes we explained our purpose, exchanged details, and set a return appointment. Two appointments later he is progressing well and his faith is growing. It's been fun to help him learn because he comes from a completely different culture. Regional indicator for United KingdomRegional indicator for ChinaπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺRegional indicator for USA

Our mission has begun using the Area Book Planner app. It was really difficult for me to adjust from using my paper planner for the first couple days. I miss my planner but I also recognise many benefits from the app. It has potential.

We've been getting to work with the members more which is fun. And Elder Aleman has improved in teaching this week. He has a lot more to say now and I credit that to him studying in Preach My Gospel with real intentions. So that makes me happier.

I was motivated by messages from General Conference about going to the rescue. In the most recent conference by an Elder Mervyn B. Arnold principle number one of rescuing is, "We must not delay going to the rescue." And "Priesthood and Personal Prayer" by President Henry B. Eyring helped me too.

I am looking forward to Zone Conference tomorrow. I'll get to see lots of friends including Elder Vieira, Elder Redd, Elder Kastner, and others.

We have had multiple conversations with people that were very convinced that we were wrong. Even when we didn't feel like they came much closer to the truth I walked away feeling so proud that I conveyed the message clearly and with confidence. I used to avoid doctrines that I wouldn't think people would agree with but not anymore. I know that this is the truth. My Father in Heaven has sent his Spirit to answer my prayers time and time again. I still have many questions but the things I do know are true. Jesus Christ is our Saviour and God has a perfect plan of happiness centred on the Atonement of Christ. He has revealed this plan in every dispensation of time. If we follow it, we will be happy. So be strong, believe, and trust in the Lord and everything will work out.
